Manuscript appraisal

I offer appraisals for short stories as well as novellas and longer manuscripts.

For short stories, I focus on three key elements you can improve, such as characterisation, use of settings and description, and point of view. I can also suggest next steps for developing your story.
For longer fiction manuscripts, I provide feedback on specific areas including the opening and ending, character motivation and development, plot and pacing, dialogue and voice. You can choose a short overview appraisal or a more in-depth analysis.

I specialise in science fiction and fantasy, literary fiction and narrative nonfiction. You can combine an appraisal with a coaching session or further editing services.

Manuscript coaching

Sometimes, the best way to work out what’s wrong with your manuscript is to talk it over with someone. I can offer objective and targeted guidance on an aspect of your manuscript or act as a sounding board for your ideas.
Let me help you define your writing goals and develop a plan to achieve them.

Structural editing

Also known as substantive or developmental editing. For fiction and narrative nonfiction, this type of edit will cover plot and character development, sequence, voice, pacing and dialogue.

For government, consultants and researchers

I have experience in developing and managing production of annual reports, strategic plans and consultant reports. I can highlight issues of flow, structure and language, and provide advice on improving navigation and accessibility for online audiences.  

If you already have an inhouse style, I’ll check for consistency, review weblinks and references, and analyse your documents for errors. If not, I can develop a house style sheet and templates for you. You might also find it useful to have a project plan and process document for future reports.
